Chopin: Concerto for piano in Em; Concerto for piano in Fm. Label.
The Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, Op. 11, is a piano concerto written by Frédéric Chopin in 1830, when he was twenty years old. It was first performed on 11 October of that year, at the Teatr Narodowy (the National Theatre) in Warsaw, Poland, with the composer as soloist, during one of his farewell concerts before leaving Poland. 2 in F minor, Op. 21, is a piano concerto composed by Frédéric Chopin in 1829. Chopin wrote the piece before he had finished his formal education, at around 20 years of age. It was first performed on 17 March 1830, in Warsaw, Poland, with the composer as soloist. It was the second of his piano concertos to be published (after the Piano Concerto No. 1), and so was designated as "No. 2", even though it was written first.
Daniil Trifonov’s album Chopin Evocations contains Chopin’s two beautiful piano concertos in fascinating new orchestrations by mposer Mikhail Pletnev. Alongside the concerts Trifonov presents Chopin’s solo works and pieces by Mompou, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Grieg, and Barber paying homage to the genius who, in Trifonov’s words, revolutionized the expressive horizons of the piano.
For Chopin, though, there was a sense of abandonment – naïvety, even – in much of his writing. Here was a composer who was barely out of his teens, still within education – still growing up, essentially. And yet, at the same time, he was able to tackle the form of the piano concerto for the first time and come up trumps in a quite astounding way. Just consider the number of famous composers who had already triumphed in the genre: Mozart composed twenty-seven; Beethoven created five, and near-contemporaries of Chopin such as Hummel and Field had also excelled when it came to writing in concerto form.

Piano Concerto No. 11: I. Allegro maestoso. Frederic Chopin, Robert Wagner, Guiomar Novaes, Innsbruck Symphony Orchestra. Radio for this track.
Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 is a thoughtfully scored composition that allows the piano to shine. The Scottish Chamber Orchestra's beautifully delicate playing perfectly highlights Fliter's authoritative, yet expressive performance. Fliter carefully and skilfully showcases the range of tones in Chopin's Second Piano Concerto, from the dramatic introductory chords at the opening of the first movement to the sweetly lyrical second movement where the Scottish Chamber Orchestra's woodwinds vie for centre stage.
