Joseph Schmidt (March 4, 1904 – November 16, 1942) was an Austro-Hungarian and Romanian Jewish tenor and actor. He was born in Davideny (Ukrainian: Davydivka) village in the Storozhynets district of the Bukovina province of Austria-Hungary, which became part of Romania after World War I and is now part of Ukraine.

Joseph Schmidt, who in the 1930's was known as "the German Caruso," singled out for praise by no less a person than Joseph Goebbels (1933),propaganda minister of the Third Reich, was actually born in Bukowina, Romania, to Jewish parents. His remarkably pure voice and natural talent were first noted in the choir of the local synagogue, and he gave his first recital at age twenty in Czernowitz. tenor showcase arias from Verdi, Puccini, Meyerbeer, Donizetti, Flotow, Leoncavallo, Rossini-monophonic and sung mostly in German, as was the custom in Germany at the time.
