The Symphony No. 4 in A major, Op. 90, commonly known as the Italian, is an orchestral symphony written by German composer Felix Mendelssohn. The work has its origins (as had the composer's Scottish 3rd Symphony and The Hebrides overture) in the tour of Europe which occupied Mendelssohn from 1829 to 1831.

Brahms began working on the piece in Mürzzuschlag, then in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in 1884, just a year after completing his Symphony No. 3. It was premiered on October 25, 1885 in Meiningen, Germany. The symphony is scored for two flutes (one doubling on piccolo), two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, contrabassoon (third and fourth movements), four horns, two trumpets, three trombones (fourth movement only), timpani, triangle (third movement only), and strings. Progressive rock group Yes's keyboardist Rick Wakeman abridged and arranged the third movement for various keyboards in the instrumental "Cans and Brahms" from the 1971 album Fragile. MacDonald, Malcolm (1990).
In our series on building a classical library, Andrew Clements selects the definitive recording of Brahms' Symphony N. Needless to say, there are myriad versions on disc, from almost every leading conductor of the 20th century from Artur Nikisch to Riccardo Chailly. Among the historical, ie, pre-LP, versions, Arturo Toscanini's with the NBC Symphony (RCA) from the late 40s still stands out for its structural rigour, clean-limbed lyricism, and the electricity his conducting generates.
