Faye Carol was born in Meridian, Mississippi, where she sang in a gospel choir at a school where her grandmother taught. At age 10 she moved to Pittsburg. Her early musical influences included Sam Cooke and Little Richard and rhythm & blues. She cut two records as Faye Ross for West Coast labels in the mid-1960s, touring for the rest of the decade as a vocalist in the Bay Area with various R&B and funk bands. She married blues musician Jim Gamble and toured with him for a number of years and in 1970 formed her own trio finding appreciative audiences in cabaret and jazz venues. Faye Carol remains true to her Mississippi roots, infusing the blues into everything she sings, from soul and R&B to the cabaret tradition. She began her career immersed in gospel, touring nationally with The Angelaires in the 1960s. She formed her jazz ensemble in the 1970s and was also active in Oakland’s innovative funk scene. Most recently, she has been heard with The Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, Howard Wiley & The Angola Project, Sista Kee & IOP, and Mal Sharpe’s Big Money in Jazz Band
