Braxton Hicks contractions are the body’s way of preparing for labour, but if you have them it doesn’t mean your labour has started. Here, we explain more about Braxton Hicks. Women often describe Braxton Hicks contractions as feeling like mild menstrual cramps or a tightening in a specific area of the stomach that comes and goes. I find them like a mild stitch that goes almost as quickly as it comes. Not painful but you're definitely aware it's there. You will soon realise when you do go into labour that Braxton Hicks cannot be mistaken for labour pains.

John Braxton Hicks FRS (23 February 1823 – 28 August 1897) was a 19th-century English doctor who specialised in obstetrics. He was born to Edward Hicks in Rye, Sussex. He was educated privately and in 1841 entered Guy's Hospital Medical School. He obtained his MB at the University of London in 1845 and an MD in 1851. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1866.

Braxton Hicks contractions, also known as practice contractions, are sporadic uterine contractions that sometimes start around sixteen weeks into a pregnancy. However, they are usually felt in the second trimester or third trimester of pregnancy. Braxton Hicks contractions are often infrequent, irregular, and involve only mild cramping. These intermittent uterine contractions usually occur every 10 - 20 minutes, also known as false labor.

Read Chapter 1 from the story Where the Ground Meets the Sky by Lexa Heda with 3,224 reads. I wake up as the bright sun peers inside my tent  . I walk outside and Bellamy approaches me. "Clarke, the commander wishes to speak with yo. "Already?" I walk to Lexa's tent and walk inside. She's facing the opposite direction but she can tell it's me. "Clarke, I'm glad you're awake. We have a lot to discuss.

Braxton Hicks contractions are tightenings of the abdomen that can easily be mistaken for labor pains. They are caused by your uterus tightening and relaxing in preparation for eventual labor, but they are not a sign that labor has begun. Braxton Hicks begin as early as the second trimester but are more common in the third trimester. Every pregnant person has Braxton Hicks, but not everybody feels them. Braxton Hicks contractions tend to increase in frequency and intensity near the end of the pregnancy and are often mistaken for labor.
