Pure Jerry: Keystone Berkeley, September 1, 1974. Pure Jerry: Keystone Berkeley, September 1, 1974 is a three-CD live album by the Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders Band. It contains the complete concert performed at the Keystone in Berkeley, California on September 1, 1974. The fourth in the Pure Jerry series of archival concert albums, it was released on December 28, 2004.

Garcia is Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia's first solo album, released in 1972. Records offered the Grateful Dead the opportunity to cut their own solo records, and Garcia was released around the same time as Bob Weir's Ace and Mickey Hart's Rolling Thunder. Unlike Ace, which was practically a Grateful Dead album, Garcia was more of a solo effort, as Garcia played almost all the instrumental parts. Six tracks (specifically those coauthored by lyricist Robert Hunter) eventually became standards in the Grateful Dead concert repertoire  . Pure Jerry: Keystone Berkeley, September 1, 1974. I want my "Soap Box" to be mighty high for this one, and some of you might agree. Some people might think, that considering tomorrow, August 9th, 2015, will sadly mark the 20th anniversary of Jerry's passing, that perhaps someone, anyone, who might have had the power, would have considered this stellar performance for re-release; alas, as possible as it may seem, don't hold your breath. What many consider as Merl and Jerry's absolute best performance ever released on CD, this pressing continues to be the "Golden Ring" for "well-to-do and privileged" collectors; and due to it's limited availability, is fetching upwards of close to $250. This alone, relegates the sweet sound of everything that was Jerry Garcia's life, now only for the people with the cash.......and lots of it. That notion does seem counter to everything Jerry and the Grateful Dead stood for, but not any longer apparently. Neither the Grateful Dead website, nor Jerry's website offer this amazing piece of history for the masses to enjoy; and personally, I find that disgustingly sad and unacceptable. It's very difficult for any of us to admit that the Grateful Dead died when Jerry left us; but it's time to move on, celebrate the past, allow the people of the future the opportunity to embrace the grand spectacle of it all, and rest easy and comfortable knowing that we did the right thing. Or should we continue to find ways to poorly replicate and be compared to another cash cow like the Stones. I don't want to buy your "Fare Thee Well" recordings (sorry, I'm just thinking to myself); I want the real thing. And this, among others should be re-released; Jerry, Merl and John would have wanted it that way. RIP gentlemen......... we miss you.
