Modernism: A New Decade is the fifth and final studio album by the band The Style Council. It represented a departure from the band's core genre of pop, to a new one; deep house, which was then being referred to as "garage" (as in Paradise Garage) music by the UK press.
An album that would stretch the loyalty of some sections of The Jam and Style Council's established fanbase was too risky for the label who were struggling to keep up with the times, and so, the decision was taken to drop The Style Council and drop plans to release 'Modernism: A New Decade' with them. It all added up to the end of the band, and Paul Weller and Mick Talbot went their own ways. Complete with drum machines, synths, jazzy brass and samples, there's no mistaking Paul Weller and Mick Talbot's intent on 'A New Decade'.

So, the Style Council recorded Modernism: A New Decade, turned it in to their label, watched as Polydor refused to release it, and then disbanded. In the new millennium Polydor has seen fit to finally release the album and it's easy to understand the label's initial negative reaction; the Style Council were famous for being musically eclectic, but they almost always retained a strong personal identity no matter what kind of musical genre they were exploring.
