A horn fanfare announces August By Cake as the 100th by Mr. Pollard and the tune is a slice of pop perfection, even if some of us might discount the execrable Suitcases and the juvenilia of Acid Ranch and call it his 93rd (I have qualms about some other side projects, but those are more legit than old tapes of fu(%ing around). Art punk stomps in before more confectioner's pop from Bob and Doug. Fever Pitch stands as the sole low point of the album, but bassist Mark Shue offers a garage punk death wish catchier than any by Iggy and Bob delivers a post punk meditation on social media followed by one of his best Kinks inspired confessionals. Drummer Kevin March then pens a gem of forgotten jangle-psych pop from an imaginary soundtrack to 1985, before Bob and the band turn up the amps to rev up a Boston Spaceships classic. Bob then renders a bland humble brag and a wry track that fuses circus style music to a commentary on religion before guitarist Bobby Bare Jr. sings the pleasant High Five Hall of Famers with the same cynical irony as Bob and the rest of the band on this album. Shue's Sudden Fiction is urgent New Wave like we haven't heard since the Fixx in the 80s and Bob closes the first side in style and with a strong voice.Side 2 opens a bit sluggishly, but roars back with Cheap Buttons and a sinister, hard rocking number that sounds like the Pogues on acid singing about the (imagined) perils of drinking and teaching. Bob drops a double dose of simple profundity after an instrumental, and Doug checks back in with an angular slice of conscious New Wave that would make Mission of Burma proud, and Bare delivers an ominous tune, continuing the trend of this LP featuring both the strongest and largest number of tunes by Bob's band mates. Bob delivers another dose of Zen, Kevin March responds with a quiet epic, and a couple of weak tracks act as a prelude to the price of admission: the monumental Amusement Park is Over. The disc fizzles rather than sizzles to a close, but there is a well earned cynicism at work here in the political and social commentary by the entire group and the sheer diversity of the set make it a piece that rewards repeated listening. It may not necessarily be the 100th record in my book, but it does instantly rank as one of the all time greats by GBV.

You can't blame em for trying. Overall, a really cool listen, but it's too stuffed with filler. If it was a single lp, this would be a solid A, but as it stands, I'm rating it a solid C. Sorta essential if that makes sense.

32 tracks... Well, Pollard's certainly consistent. However, it comes off like 32 tracks of an exercise in stream consciousness. I'm fond of telling friends… Especially younger ones that when I grow up I want to be a Rock Star like Robert Pollard. Even I don't completely understand what I mean by this, but... Who cares? My suggestion: I borrowed this from the local library. I can only listen to it in short bursts. It has a due date. It got an early return. It's your skrilla... I'd buy a slice and a soda, first. [Whispering]… Read between the lines.
