Allegro appassionato. Kirill Gerstein, Tabea Zimmermann. 2. Andante un poco Adagio.

Musicians: Piano – Kirill Gerstein Viola – Tabea Zimmermann Composer - rahms, Schubert, Franck. Tabea Zimmermann and Kirill Gerstein return to the studio to record the follow-up to their highly praised first duo album. The new disc includes spellbinding performances of three late works by significant 19th century composers: Brahms mature Sonata in F minor, Schubert s melancholic Arpeggione Sonata, and Franck s splendid Sonata in A major, all masterly performed on viola

The dream team of Tabea Zimmermann and Kirill Gerstein brilliantly transform three great sonatas, writes Fiona Maddocks. These revered chamber musicians, the German viola player Tabea Zimmermann and the Russian-American pianist Kirill Gerstein, have chosen these three sonatas with immense care: each was written late in the composer's life, each originally composed for an instrument other than the viola. Brahms's F minor Sonata (for clarinet) exploits the darkest colours and lowest range of the viola, and suits its yearning mood, especially in the hands of a duo who have already recorded the companion E flat Sonata.

The piano-accompanied sonatas are relatively wellknown, so too the Trauermusik composed in a single evening to mark the death of King George V. The solo viola works have had less attention: Hindemith referred to them as Gebrauchsmusik, by which he meant compositions with simple, linear structures, often intended for amateur players: music that responded to a particular need or us. Bach - Suites for Violoncello Solo (For Viola solo, Spindler). 2013-05-26Op - Ivor Mairants - Jazz Sonatas for Solo Guitar.

Kirill Gerstein was brought up in the former Soviet Union studying both classical and jazz piano, and at the age of 14 years he moved to the US where he was the youngest student to attend Boston’s Berklee College of Music. He subsequently shifted his focus to the classical repertoire and studied with Solomon Mikowsky in New York, Dmitri Bashkirov in Madrid and Ferenc Rados in Budapest. Gerstein won the first of a series of prestigious accolades in 2001: First Prize at the 10th Arthur Rubinstein Competition
