The sonatas each consist of four movements, in the typical slow-fast-slow-fast structure. The partitas, however, are more unorthodox. They make use of the usual baroque dance mixture of Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, and Gigue, but Bach added new elements to provide variety. It’s not known whether these works were performed during Bach's lifetime or, if they were, who the performer was. It’s possible that the composer himself gave the first performance. Today, they are an essential part of the violin repertoire, frequently performed and recorded. Like so many of Bach’s pieces, they have become archetypes for solo violin pieces by other composers including in the 20th century, Béla Bartók. These questions and likely hundreds more are all violinists deciding to record Bach's sonatas and partitas for solo violin need to answer. In the case of this album by Australian violinist Richard Tognetti, most decisions lean toward period performance practice, including using a Baroque bow and gut strings tuned to a' 415. Of course, the instrument that's played and how it's tuned has less to do with the quality of a performance than might be hoped, especially by Tognetti

These are among the most difficult solo-violin works ever written, differing from other pieces of supreme difficulty such as Paganinis 24 Caprices in that they are not showpieces but in-depth explorations of the violins technical and emotional range. Their virtuosity is understated but pervasive, and Ilya Kaler understands this well: his performance is carefully structured, emotional without being overly (and inappropriately) swooning, and tremendously attentive to details.

They are unusual in being totally solo with no accompaniment of any kind; the most famous movement from the Bach sonatas and partitas is the Chaconne that concludes the Partita N. Although most of Bach’s catalog of works is filled with grand sacred choral works, orchestral concertos, and solo organ pieces, he also composed a half dozen partitas and sonatas for solo violin.
