Gérard Souzay, Leopold Stokowski. L'Orfeo dates from a 1960 performance at the New York City Opera conducted by Leopold Stokowski, and it is marked by a souped-up orchestration and unfortunate cuts as well as incongruous interpolations of extra music in performances that would have been acceptable at the time but are embarrassing in light of the increased understanding of early music performance practice in the. last quarter of the twentieth century. Souzay gives a merely workmanlike performance, and the role lies surprisingly low for his voice, requiring him to growl out the lowest notes

This release of live recordings, including a nearly complete version of L'Orfeo and selections from opera, oratorio, and song cycles, will be of interest only to the most devoted fans of French baritone Gérard Souzay. There are innumerable barriers to the enjoyment of this set. The sound quality varies from bad to execrable, with an unusually high level of stage and audience noises, tape hiss, record surface scratches, and pitch variability.

L'Orfeo (SV 318) (Italian pronunciation: ), sometimes called La favola d'Orfeo, is a late Renaissance/early Baroque favola in musica, or opera, by Claudio Monteverdi, with a libretto by Alessandro Striggio. It is based on the Greek legend of Orpheus, and tells the story of his descent to Hades and his fruitless attempt to bring his dead bride Eurydice back to the living world. It was written in 1607 for a court performance during the annual Carnival at Mantua.

Leopold Anthony Stokowski (18 April 1882 – 13 September 1977) was an English conductor of Polish and Irish descent. One of the leading conductors of the early and mid-20th century, he is best known for his long association with the Philadelphia Orchestra and his appearance in the Disney film Fantasia. Stokowski was named after his Polish-born grandfather Leopold, who died in the English county of Surrey on 13 January 1879, at the age of 4. .The "mystery" surrounding his origins and accent is clarified in Oliver Daniel's 1000-page biography Stokowski – A Counterpoint of View (1982), in which (in Chapter 12) Daniel reveals Stokowski came under the influence of his first wife, pianist Olga Samaroff. After stereo became possible on phonograph records, the album was released in stereo on Buena Vista Records.
