Harris Goldsmith, a rarity in classical music for his simultaneous careers as a professional pianist and a music critic, died on April 2 in Manhattan. He was 78. His death, of congestive heart failure, was confirmed by John Gerlach, a friend and the director of the Tri-Institutional Noon Recitals series at Rockefeller University. Known for his humor, wit and encyclopedic memory of recordings and performances, Mr. Goldsmith was a frequent contributor to Musical America and High Fidelity magazine, the latter now defunct, as well as a prolific writer of liner and program notes. As a pianist, Mr. Goldsmith was best known for his recordings of the Beethoven sonatas, Mr. Goode said. He had a powerful grasp of music in general and classical style in particular, he added. He was much more than a pianist; he was a student of the whole literature. He knew the Beethoven symphonies and quartets by memory.
