Instead, Chilean-American pianist Pola Baytelman, using a couple of familiar composers (Villa-Lobos and Ginastera) as bookends, introduces several figures who are largely unknown outside Chile. An attractive feature of Baytelman's program is that it rejects the boxes of nationalism, popular crossover, and avant-garde, or perhaps that it brings out this blurring of boundaries in the repertories she examines themselves. 33, extend and play off of the nationalist and impressionist influences present in Latin American traditions.

Baytelman has performed Albéniz monumental Iberia in tours of major . cities and recorded a groundbreaking CD of Albéniz work in 1998 (Elan). Her doctorate in piano performance is from the University of Texas at Austin, where she studied with Nancy Garrett. She has also worked with Claude Frank and Menahem Pressler. Her latest compact disc, From Chile to Cuba, was released by Albany Records in 2009. Baytelman's recording of Robert Schumann's Humoreske (2002 Centaur) was listed by American Record Guide as one of the top three performances of the classic work.
