1934 recordings of the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham, released on the LPO Label. These remarkable, recently discovered recordings by the London Philharmonic Orchestra of music by Sibelius, Mozart and Handel from the 1934 Leeds Festival are conducted by the legendary Sir Thomas Beecham, who had founded the Orchestra just two years earlier. Included in a varied collection of works typical of Beecham are the first ever recording of Sibelius's The Tempest, and the splendid sounds of Mozart's C minor Mass and Handel's Israel in Egypt – excerpts of extraordinary power performed by the Orchestra and the Leeds Festival Chorus. The London Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1932 by Sir Thomas Beecham and has been headquartered at the Southbank Centre since 1951. Such internationally acclaimed conductors as Sir Adrian Boult, Bernard Haitink, Sir Georg Solti, Klaus Tennstedt, and Kurt Masur have influenced the orchestra’s history in their roles as chief conductors. In 2007 Vladimir Jurowski was named Principal Conductor; Andrés Orozco-Estrada has served alongside him since 2015 as Principal Guest Conductor. LUCERNE FESTIVAL (IMF) debut on 17 August 1992 in a program of works by Beethoven and Strauss conducted by Klaus Tennstedt.

Since Beecham, the orchestra has had ten principal conductors, including Sir Adrian Boult, Bernard Haitink, Sir Georg Solti, Klaus Tennstedt and Vladimir Jurowski. The orchestra has been active in recording studios since its earliest days, and has played on hundreds of sets made by EMI, Decca and other companies. After twelve rehearsals, the orchestra made its debut at the Queen's Hall on 7 October 1932, conducted by Beecham. After the first item, Berlioz's Roman Carnival Overture, the audience went wild, some of them standing on their seats to clap and shout.
