Modern Music is the fourth studio album by the British progressive rock group Be-Bop Deluxe. It was produced by band leader Bill Nelson and producer/engineer John Leckie. but it was Be Bop's peak, not its breakthrough. All songs written and composed by Bill Nelson. Side one. "Orphans of Babylon" - 3:15. Twilight Capers" - 4:25. Kiss of Light" - 3:11.
The band that turned up in glam rock regalia on its 1974 debut, Axe Victim, was in suit and tie on the cover of Modern Music in 1976. Inside, the band's transformation into a sophisticated pop group seemed complete. Arrangements were still ornate, but the songs were dominated by their highly imagistic lyrics, and as often as not, Nelson was borrowing ideas from the Beatles.
Be-Bop Deluxe were an English progressive rock band who achieved critical acclaim and moderate commercial success during the mid to late 1970s. The band's sound emerged as a mixture of glam rock, prog rock and straightforward rock and roll. Science fiction imagery was common in the lyrics, along with the more traditional themes of love and the human condition.
27. Like An Old Blues (2004 - Remaster). 28. Crystal Gazing (2004 - Remaster). 29. Blazing Apostles (2004 - Remaster). Kudos to Warner Music/ Rhino for this new addition to their Original Album Series, containing the Harvest label British release versions of all 5 of Be-Bop Deluxe’s studio albums from 1974-78. For those not familiar with this critically acclaimed, but not overly commercially successful band, their sound was a mix of glam, prog & straightforward rock, led by Bill Nelson (who at the time was considered one of the finest guitarists in England).
Be Bop Deluxe’s first three long players – Axe Victim (1974), Futurama (1975) and Sunburst Finish (February 1976) – were all slices of complex, multi-layered rock embellished by Nelson’s highly ornate solo guitar work. After the demise of the band in 1978, Nelson worked with soloists like David Sylvian, and produced and mentored The Skids – indeed, Stuart Adamson admitted his guitar work owed much to his friend Bill. The first Compact Disc pressing of Modern Music arrived in 1990 (EMI CDP 7 94731 2), and sounds surprisingly good for an album of that era, while the 2008 Japanese reissue (Harvest TOCP-70361) is the audiophile choice.
