The Blues "White Album". The conceit of this collection is that a bunch of blues musicians have been gathered together to pay a kind of tribute to the Beatles, some of whose music has roots in the blues, by playing some cuts from The Beatles (which just about everybody refers to as "The White Album"). Hmm. The album gets off to a bad start with a ponderous, leaden, dragging version of "Why Don't We Do It in the Road?," performed here by a group called "Jimmy Thackery and the Drivers

The Grateful Dead is the debut album of the Grateful Dead. It was released by Warner Bros. Records in March 1967. According to the biographies of both bassist Phil Lesh and drummer Bill Kreutzmann, the band released the album as San Francisco's Grateful Dead. The album was primarily recorded at RCA's Studio A, in Los Angeles, in only four days. The band had wanted to record the tracks in their hometown of San Francisco, but no recording studios in the area had modernized equipment at the time

An excellent example is Long Live the Dead, which finds singers Billy and Terry Smith putting a Southern spin on the music of the Grateful Dead. Best known in bluegrass circles, Billy and Terry discovered the Dead's music by accident: they heard the New Deal String Band (a bluegrass outfit) doing "Friend of the Devil" before they heard the Dead do it, and they became hip to Jerry Garcia through his work with mandolin virtuoso David Grisman. So when the singers entered a Nashville studio to record this 1996 CD, they embraced the Dead's songs on their own creative terms.
