Charles Munch conducts "Marche au supplice" from Symphonie fantastique, O. 4a (Movement IV) From: VAI DVD 4317 Charles Munch: Boston Symphony Orchestra Berlioz, Debussy, Ravel. Charles Munchs performances of the French symphonic repertoire were cornerstones of his tenure with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. From a 1962 concert with the orchestra, Munch provides thrilling, luminous performances of Symphonie Fantastique, La Mer, and Daphnis and Chloe Suite N. Approximately 80 minutes, black & white, mono.

While RCA's Complete Collections usually cover one composer's work in a specific genre, this box set is a compendium of Charles Münch's complete Berlioz recordings with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The distinction may matter little to fans of the arch-Romantic composer, whose works are too varied to fall under one rubric anyway; but it is important to point out the significance of Münch's achievement and why this set is so big.

Charles Munch - Hector Berlioz. It is just something like Chopin-Rubinstein,, Rudolf Kempe-R. Strauss, Bruno Walter-Mahler duos. Charles Munch, who is the best French conductor in my opinion, is really performed these Berlioz mesterpieces, just like how Berlioz wanted. There is no any tiny boring moments! Always there is a spontaneity, always something new and surprising.
