Underrated...i enjoy more this album than the two next albums...this album is more solid and consistent...Sounds Of Silence strikes a more positive balance between the duo's poppy and artsy sides

Rushed back (Simon flew back from the UK) into the studio after the unexpected success of a more electrified Sound of Silence, the LP itself is a nice blending of folk-rock mixed with the harmonies of the Everly Brothers, traditional folk but with a more sophisticated lyrical awareness that effortlessly blends child-like hymnals of unrequited love and hopes and dreams of the future with a sadness and innocence that stands out among its contemporaries. The organ playing on some of the tracks echoes the garage rock revolution mixed with heavy influences of Buffalo Springfield, the Turtles, the Byrds and the Mamas & the Papas. Yet Simon's acoustically bare pieces stand out here, especially Kathy's Song, April Come She Will and Blues Run The Game, which showcase the brilliant tones of Art Garfunkel's and Paul Simon's euphonious vocal balance. I Am A Rock became a successful pop standard and features a flashy arpeggio fill in the beginning by Simon, not necessarily a fluid album in its arrangement, but a fantastic hodgepodge of folk-rock and acoustic ballads.

The original review is pretty much on the mark - but when the songs do work with backing it's do the presence of the WRECKING CREW including part time wrecker Glen Campbell. When you give a close listen you hear treats like Joe Osborn's great bass playing. However, compared to the records that followed the sound & production are not that great.

There are vast differences between S&G's first record and Sounds Of Silence. An explosion in the folk-rock movement had really transformed several artists. It may have begun with Dylan plugging in and going electric, but Simon & Garfunkel's use of electricity on their rerelease of The Sound Of Silence may have turned the whole movement upside down just as much. The rest of the album follows suit, blending Paul and Art's natural harmonic gifts and their instincts into a folk-rock masterwork. Key tracks are The Sound Of Silence, Leaves That Are Green, Kathy's Song, Richard Cory, and I Am A Rock.

Sounds pretty dated, but an improvement on their début. Other than the title track, "Leaves that are Green", "Kathy's Song" & "Anji" are the decent numbers here.
