Castle's Beat, Beat, Beat series is an exhaustive look at the British beat group movement of the early to mid-'60s. More than a history of the groups, it is a history of the evolution of a sound, the innocent and usually exuberant sound of the post-Beatles pop explosion.

Beat Beat Beat Vol. 5. Various Artists. Covering the usual 60 songs taken from 33 singles, it's a collection of three Top Five successes, five Top 40 smashes and 25 & movers' (and if you reached the dizzy heights of Number 31, that was a smash as far as the label was concerned). With screaming reminiscent of a schoolgirl confronted with a spider (and being just 14, that's exactly what she was), Tammy St John covers the ubiquitous & and sounds the same as any other female performer who recorded this around the same time, whilst Me & Them deliver an insipid version of & Me Why'. By the time summer gave way to autumn in 1964, the beat boom was all but over and The Kinks glorious final single of the year (& Day And All Of The Night') stuck the boot in. It got more sophisticated from here on in but no one at Pye realised.
