Listeners looking for examples of Arvo Pärt's tonal, tintinnabular style will find that most of the works on this 2003 CD meet their needs. Composed between 1996 and 2002, these eight pieces are triadically based, shaded with modal inflections, and free of the tight dissonances and chromatic touches that adorned much of Pärt's music in the 1980s.

Arvo Pärt is one of those latter-day musical mystics who have caught something in the public mood. Years ago I went to hear his St John Passion at the Brompton Oratory, expecting to see the usual tiny new-music coterie, and found the place so packed that there wasn’t even standing room. What attracts people to his work is the primal simplicity of the music, its calm luminous certainties. But there are things about Pärt that set him apart from the other so-called holy minimalists.
