The album cover features the 1961 painting 'Annunciation', by Mati Klarwein.Carlos Santana saw a reproduction of the Annunciation in a magazine and wanted it for the cover of his all time best selling Abraxas album. The way it was painted was in fact a provocation of the traditional Biblical meaning of Annunciation. A winged and tattooed Gabriel is depicted astride a conga drum, pointing heavenwards to a Hebrew Aleph symbol (signifying beginning), with a dark-skinned and naked Mary surrounded by images of fertility.'Drums were always used to announce something,' Mati said. 'They were a medium of communication in Africa.' To the left are three Wodaabe Charm Dancers, perhaps representing the Three Kings, and an image of Mati himself.

This is one of those timeless Classics that gets better and better as time goes by...Nearly 50 years on I never tire of the depth, rhythm and vitality of this album and it sounds as fresh as it did in the 70,s.AS a musician and a band they obviously matured and perfected their interplay over the ensuing decades but never have they sounded as alive and with it as on this their 2nd album , considered by many an all time Gem, and considered by most Santana peers as their finest hour and certainly commercially one of their most successful. When one listens to BLACK MAGIC WOMAN, SE A CABO, OYE COMO VA, the incredible INCIDENT AT NEASHABAUR and the all time fave SAMBA PATI, how can anyone doubt the sheer brilliance and quality of this album?? THIS is SANTANA at their very very best!!

If there was a band that epitomized Latin rock, it would be Santana, if there was an album that epitomized Latin rock, it would be their 1970 sophomore effort Abraxas. With Abraxas, Santana matured the sound they nurtured on their self-titled debut from the previous year which mixed elements of soul jazz, acid rock, and Latin dance music to create something wholly new and unique. Abraxas crackles, slithers, and rocks colorful Latin rhythms, deep bass lines, trippy guitar work, and plenty of mystical energy and mystery on songs like Gypsy Queen/Black Magic Woman, Oye Como Va, Incident at Neshabur, Se a Cabo, Mother's Daughter, and El Nicoya. The result is one of the great rock albums of the 1970's and all time and one of the great albums of Latin music. Abraxas is timeless.

Silly Dog
One of the greatest albums ever, period.
