Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr studied at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and at the Eastman School, from which she received a Performer s Certificate and Doctor of Musical Arts degree. She has performed and lectured at many International Clarinet Congresses and for several years was a participant in the Marlboro Music Festival and touring groups. She has appeared frequently in the United States and Canada as recitalist, clinician, and soloist with orchestras. As a member of the Richards Wind Quintet, she played in more than half of the United States, Canada, and at the White House. The Boston Globe noted her "musical tone and elegant sense of phrasing," while the Chicago Tribune wrote of her "virtuosity of a most compelling ar. Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr (born April 14, 1936) is an American clarinetist and music educator whose contributions to the Verdehr Trio have resulted in an extensive modern body of work for the o trio medium. Born in Charlottesville, Virginia, Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr received Bachelor of Music degrees in both clarinet performance and music education from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where she studied with George Waln.
The Verdehr Trio is a chamber ensemble that has worked to promote the o trio repertoire through international commissions, recordings, and performances. The trio features Walter Verdehr on violin, Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr on clarinet, and Silvia Roederer on piano. The Ludewig-Verdehrs were married in 1971 and founded the trio in 1972 at Michigan State University where it has remained in residence. Former pianists include Gary Kirkpatrick. Series I includes composers Leslie Bassett, Alan Hovhaness, Karel Husa, Thea Musgrave (Pierrot), Ned Rorem, and Gunther Schuller.
