O Emperor are a five piece rock band from Waterford, Ireland. All members met in secondary school in Waterford and for these years went under a number of guises, performing covers in pubs and clubs throughout Waterford city. The five went to college in Cork and during this period, evolved into an original outfit now called O Emperor in 2009. Debut album: Hither Thither. The group spent most of 2012 recording material for their second album Vitreous, which was released on June 14, 2013. Two tracks from this session Electric Tongues/Erman Gou were issued as a standalone double A-side single in November 2012. Vitreous was self-recorded and produced in the band's very own studio (Big Skin HQ) in Cork city. Big Skin was (literally) built from the ground up and everything from label administration to recording happens inside its grubby, fire-stained walls.

When you first hit play on Vitreous, the second album from Irish alt-rock outfit O Emperor, the sparse piano and sturdy but placid vocals don’t immediately strike you as particularly ambitious. But give opening track Grandmother Mountain a minute (literally) and you’ll soon realise that Vitreous is a rich exploration of the character found in predecessors and peers

Grandmother Mountain.

Article Published: January 23, 2014. In many ways getting dropped has worked to O Emperor’s advantage. It’s certainly allowed the band to be more adventurous; while their first album was very much a folk rock affair this album sees the band move into much more experimental territories, adopting elements of prog rock, post-rock, electronica, and even a bit of glam along the way. It has also lead to the emergence of the bands more abrasive side, which is best illustrated on Contact, one of the album’s stand out tracks.
