Music from the Convents on Lüneberg Heath.
Lüneburg Heath has extensive areas of heathland, typical of those that covered most of the North German countryside until about 1800, but which have almost completely disappeared in other areas. The Lüneburg Heath is a large area of heathland, geest and forest in the north German state of Lower Saxony within a triangle formed by the cities of Hanover, Bremen and Hamburg. Much of it coincides with the historical Principality of Lüneburg. Today, most of the area is now protected by nature parks and nature reserves, the biggest being the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park, the Nordheide and Südheide. Northern Low Saxon is still widely spoken. The heaths were formed after the New Stone Age by the overgrazing of forests on the poor sandy soils known as geest. The heath is kept clear mainly through grazing a North German breed of moorland sheep called the Heidschnucke. Its unique landscape makes the Lüneburg Heath a popular tourist destination.
