Annie Gallup remembers what too many singer/songwriters forget: to be sonically engaging. This means that cool backbeats and heavy basslines keep one's songs from fading into a background of sameness. Even on a song like "Blue Dress," which may seem a little more typical with its sad violins and sadder lyric, Gallup's incessant delivery, overrunning her verse lines or trying to cram too many words in a line, isn't ordinary. Courage My Love and her follow-up album, Swerve, provide excellent introductions to Gallup's art. While nothing is wrong with her earlier recordings, she seems to have found her voice on these two albums. Her atypical approach to folk/Americana offers a fresh break from your garden-variety singer/songwriter.

Annie Gallup is spoken word in the same fashion as some of my favourite artists like Lou Reed, Elliott Murphy, and Bruce Cockburn. Plus, Annie’s got a great voice that can range from soothing and reassuring to sly and conspiratorial. On Courage My Love, the music is not an afterthought; the outstanding bass playing of Michael Visceglia deserves special mention.

A lifetime’s dedication to her art has made Annie Gallup an icon among people who take songwriting seriously. Unabashedly imaginative and sensual, her elaborate song-length works of fiction crackle with wordplay and pulse with insistent rhythm. Borrowing forms from ancient folk tales to modern poetry, Annie sings over her bluesy guitar figures as if sharing secrets.

Annie Gallup is an American singer-songwriter. She grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan and attended the University of Michigan School of Art before moving to Kentucky, Washington State, North Carolina and Massachusetts. She lives currently in Santa Barbara, California. She has ten CDs of original songs as a solo artist, and five with Peter Gallway as the duo Hat Check Girl.
