Liszt 's transcriptions of 12 of the songs from Winterreise are relentlessly banal and hopelessly vulgar, transforming some of the most heartrending songs ever written into excuses for posing and posturing. Worse yet are the six other Liszt transcriptions following the Winterreise songs. Compare Schubert 's ethereal original of Das Sterbeglöcklein with Liszt 's bathetic transcription. Is it not a desecration of the sublime original?
