Raphael Saadiq's unabashedly retro fourth album doesn't try to "update" old soul sounds; instead, the former Tony! Toni! . Fortunately, "100 Yard Dash" rights things quickly, sounding appropriately dashed off. Sex and social issues commingle on The Way I See It, with playfully physical songs like "Dash", "Just One Kiss", and "Let's Take a Walk" (sample lyric: "Love can happen anywhere") alongside fare like "Keep Marchin'" and "Big Easy".
One could disregard his third solo studio album for being the equivalent of a Civil War reenactment, sounding much more like "instant vintage" R&B than 2002's Instant Vintage

The Way I See It finds Saadiq back in the territory he finds most comfortable, the classic Sixties soul style invented by Motown's backroom geniuses; and it says something about him and that label that it's a better expression of the Motown aesthetic than anything the company has produced for at least the past decade. The way I see it, it's his very own love-letter to an era when R&B wasn't embarrassed about having soul. But if you hanker after classic Motown, it'll not spoil your enjoyment of one of the year's most impressive and engaging albums. Joss Stone Marvin Gaye Motown Stevie Wonder.

The East Bay native we call Raphael Saadiq came a long way from Tony! Toni! Toné! and Lucy Pearl to drop his fourth LP entitled The Way I See It featuring Jay-Z, Stevie Wonder & Joss Stone. This release feels so throwback with influential sounds hinting at The Temptations, The Delfonics and The Stylistics. Even the album artwork adopts the same throwback appeal. Saadiq has six shows left in his tour US tour promoting this album. Check him out if he happens to be in your city. Until then, listen to the album in full here.
