De Sabata came out of retirement in January 1957 to conduct at Toscanini’s funeral. The cortège stopped in front of La Scala, the doors were opened and de Sabata conducted the orchestra in the funeral march from Beethoven’s Eroica. De Sabata’s approach to conducting was more subjective and flexible than Toscanini’s. The conductor he reminds me of most is Dimitri Mitropoulos (both had photographic memories and conducted everything, even new music, without a score). Mitropoulos was an admirer of de Sabata and invited him to guest conduct the New York Philharmonic in 1950 and 1951. The Berlin Philharmonic Brahms and Strauss were on a 1988 Deutsche Grammophon CD. All the London Philharmonic recordings (minus En Saga) were on a 1990 Decca CD. CDs 1 & 4 in this new box appear to be a straight reissue of those CDs.

Victor de Sabata (10 April 1892 – 11 December 1967) was an Italian conductor and composer. He is widely recognized as one of the most distinguished operatic conductors of the twentieth century, especially for his Verdi, Puccini and Wagner. De Sabata is acclaimed for his interpretations of orchestral music. Like his near contemporary Wilhelm Furtwängler, de Sabata regarded composition as more important than conducting but achieved more lasting recognition for his conducting than his compositions

When Victor de Sabata died on December 11, 1967 at the age of 75, the music world mourned one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century. Not only an outstanding conductor, de Sabata was also celebrated for his multifarious musical gifts – his mastery of every instrument, his prodigious memory, and as a composer who had been championed by Toscanini, Serafin and Damrosch.
