The Marionette and the Music Box is certainly a concept album. Marking a significant departure from their earlier recordings, Unwed Sailor's instrumental brand of delicately-arranged orchestration blends eloquently with the tale, which has to be pieced together by the listener with only the help of the 17 drawings for the album's 17 mini-epics.

The Unwed Sailor The Marionette and the Music Box concept album was then released on Burnt Toast Vinyl in August 2003 as a companion piece to the Jamie Hunt illustrated children's book of the same name. Ford explained in 2010 that the album was their most experimental recording at the time: We literally created our own sounds and instruments for that record. It was very much like creating a movie soundtrack-just being in a room with a couple of random objects and using them to create the sound another object would make. Retrieved May 31, 2015.
Unwed Sailor created the album as a companion piece to Jamie Hunt's 17-plate illustrated children's book which spins the tale of our two protagonists and is included in the liner notes. The song titles double as captions to the plates, and feature such narrative-driven handles as "Meeting of the Marionette and the Music Box", "The Separation. A Hopeless Pursuit", and "The Return to Open Arms". You get the picture: all 17 of them. Which, truth be told, are a small accomplishment on their own right. The music itself is a truncated version of previous Unwed.

Needing to relax, I popped in Unwed Sailor's The Marionette and the Music Box, a CD I had been struggling with for quite some time. I had hated it upon first listen, with its quiet and subtle nature. I had been a big fan of The Faihtful Anchor, Sailor's previous full-length, and wanted more of the energy found in that album. I mean, bands can reinvent themselves, and to do so after a brilliant album like Faithful Anchor would take more guts than could ever have. Driving through downtown Indianapolis that day I realized something. Unwed Sailor, no matter what they sound like, will always have something not many bands (or people for that matter) possess: Purity.
The album consists of 17 instrumental tracks, each of which coincide with a painting by graphic artist Jamie Hunt in the included booklet. The paintings and song titles tell the story of a marionette who journeys out of his cottage and discovers a music box in the woods nearby
