Smart move by Paul Weller to leave The Jam when he did: They couldn't possibly keep on turning out quality hits, in the style that their fans were demanding, indefinitely. So The Jam will always remain a legend, untarnished by any possible later mediocre efforts ( or ill advised comeback tours), which so many bands do, to their own detriment.Image is so important (as you would expect, if you had called yourselves "The Style Council"), and the image portrayed on the cover is of a lazy summer in Paris. The tracks "Long Hot Summer" and "The Paris Match" reinforce this, with Paul singing a few lines in French on the latter. Long Hot Summer seems to go on for ever, yet, when it ends I always feel a bit sad that it has ended. The whole languid melancholy of the song has a hypnotic effect (helped by the funky drum beats).Speak Like A Child is another excellent track. Whilst Mick's Up is a short fun track (with Mick Talbot on piano, which seems to be a pastiche of The InCrowd by Ramsey Lewis. (There is the same enthusiasm from the audience of, presumably, mods.)The album works so well because, back then, Paul Weller was still young and full of ideas (just as he was when he made In The City 6 years earlier). The freshness was back.

Paul Weller continues his transformation from Pete Townshend to Paul McCartney.
