L'amour de loin (2000) is Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho's first opera, but the mastery of its memorably dramatic music demonstrates incontrovertibly that she is a born opera composer. The opera has had numerous international productions and in 2003 it received the Grawemeyer Award, the most prestigious international award for composition.

The opera received its world premiere performance on 15 August 2000 at the Salzburg Festival. Saariaho, living in Paris since 1982, had become familiar in 1993 with La vida breve by one of the first great 12th-century troubadours, Jaufré Rudel.

Kaija Saariaho: L'Amour de loin. Composed to a libretto by Amin Maalouf and premiered at Salzburg in 2000 in a production by Peter Sellars, L'amour de loin was Kaija Saariaho's first opera. A reinterpretation of La vida breve, a narrative poem by the Medieval troubadour Jaufre Rudel, L'amour de loin tackles a number of highly topical themes: love from afar, the virtuality of ideal love and relations between East and West.

Happily, Kent Nagano's interpretation here makes the most of every nuance. Saariaho's vocal writing is also minimalist, with the women in particular not exploring their tessiture until much later on. However, these soloists give it all they’ve got, and Ekaterina Lekhina's delivery of the Countess's final prayer is every bit as desolately powerful as it is on the stage. All in all, this is a finely balanced and atmospheric performance, ensuring that the opera works almost as well on disc as it does on stage. Performers: Kent Nagano (cond  . Kaija Saariaho’s first opera, L’amour de loin, was premiered in Salzburg in August 2000 and the same production was given at the Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris inNovember/December 2001, and in Santa Fe, summer 2002. Additional productions have been staged at Theater Bern, Switzerland and future performances will take place in Darmstadt, Germany (spring 2003) and at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki (2004). In 1983, he began to be known as an author, with the success of novels such as Léon l’Africain and Samarkand. His book Le Rocher de Tanios from 1993 was awarded the Prix Goncourt. The story of the opera L’amour de loin is based on La Vida breve of Jaufre Rudel, Prince of Blaye, one of the first great troubadours of the 12th century. His glowing passion for a woman from the East of whom he has only heard is the central theme of the libretto.

Robert Lepage’s dreamlike production, with its thousands of twinkling LED lights stretching across the stage to represent the sea, encapsulates the mystic feeling of L’Amour de Loin, Saariaho’s haunting opera of distant love. Eric Owens is Jaufré Rudel, a troubadour in 12th century France who has become tired of his hedonistic life and longs for an idealized love.
