A Social Grace is Psychotic Waltz’s first and most popular album. However, it has since got a lot of underground attention and gained a lot of popularity (I’m always happy to see it rated as 12th best album of 1990 on rateyourmusic. co. n amazing achievement for such an underrated band).

Oh, no: another “Progressive Metal lost classic”! In case you didn’t know, Psychotic Waltz have become a big name in their genre only because everyone seems to say it, who probably didn’t even buy the first edition of this album in 1990. Oh, we’re not attacking their musical preparation… but what about their songs? Their first album A Social Grace is “complex and thoughtful Progressive Metal that was ahead of its time”: translation, the band were totally indistinguishable from Fates Warning. Since Queensrÿche had always an obsession for the Popular Music market and Fates Warning not, it becomes natural why Psychotic Waltz were completely derivative: the songwriting is excessively ornamental, excessively pompous and theatric as that of Jim Matheos, Devon Graves’ voice is identical to that of Ray Alder, excluding less tendency on terrible high notes, and the absurd rhythmic dexterity and the constant use of stop-starts makes every single moment of the album reek of inaccessibility. The band was incapable of playing things straight. The storm of irregular patterns and additional rhythms is inexcusable and irritating. When clean guitar arpeggios come, the band inevitably jumps to Adult Contemporary territory. After all is done, it’s done. The band fail to deliver paranoid emotions and merely stick to their derivative guns without offering memorable hooks and plenty of showbiz. First-time listeners should be careful to eventual yawn overkills.Highlights: “A Psychotic Waltz”, “Nothing”.
