The Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43, by Jean Sibelius was started in winter 1901 in Rapallo, Italy, shortly after the successful premiere of the popular Finlandia, and finished in 1902 in Finland. Sibelius said, "My second symphony is a confession of the soul.
Symphony N. in D major. Helsinki Philharmonic Society, Jean Sibelius (conductor).
by Leonard Bernstein;New York Philharmonic Orchestra. 1 in E Minor, Op. 39: Symphony No. 39: III. Scherzo - Allegro by Leonard Bernstein;New York Philharmonic Orchestra. The concluding minutes of the Fourth Symphony's finale may disturb those who feel it should end "in tempo;" Sibelius' marking is Allegro with no further change, but Bernstein slows to a tragic, funereal adagio much like a Bruckner slow movement. There is a lack of bass response in the earliest recordings of the Fifth and Seventh symphonies but not enough to detract from the listening experience of the whole set.
