Ninel Kurgapkina was one of the Kirov Ballet’s outstanding ballerinas, teachers and coaches. She was born in St Petersburg in 1929 and entered the famous Vaganova Academy there when she was 17, becoming one of the last pupils to study with its founder, the celebrated Agrippina Vaganova. On graduating to the Kirov Ballet in 1947, she was soon promoted to soloist ranking, holding the position of prima ballerina until 1981, well beyond the usual retirement age. Then her speed, attack and energy were still such that many thought she ought to have continued longer.
