His primary role was as a segunda voz, or harmony, singer. Guerra was born in Cienfuegos to an impoverished family, and was orphaned at age five. In 1931 he moved to Havana, where he sang in Ignacio Piñeiro's Septeto Nacional and took guitar lessons from Rafael Rebuifero. Marcelino worked as a merchant marine aboard the American-Export Isbrandsten liners, SS Atlantic and later aboard the SS Constitution. Marcelino died in El Campello, a coastal town within the Valencian community in Alicante, Spain in June 1996. Today you can still hear his brilliant melodies.

Marcelino Guerra (born Cienfuegos, Cuba 1914 - 1996) started working as musician and a composer in Havana starting in 1931. Guerra was cremated, and his ashes were scattered at the foot of the Statue of Liberty according to a provision of his will. Buscando la melodia - Henry Fiol (live). Probably the best known composition by Guerra is Pare Cochero, which has been recorded by countless bands, including Machito in 1940 and arguably most famously by Orquesta Aragon.

Marcelino worked as a merchant marine aboard the American-Export Isbrandsten liners, SS Atlantic and later aboard the SS Constitution.
