The term "township jive" generally means mbaqanga, a unique fusion of rural and urban music characterized by prominent electric bass, tightly arranged horns, and cascading guitar lines. The fourth volume in the Earthworks label's excellent Indestructible Beat of Soweto series focuses on early-'90s hits by the Soul Brothers, one of South Africa's finest mbaqanga groups, but it also includes tracks by such other eminent combos as Mahlathini & the Mahotella Queens and Steve Kekana.

It introduced worldbeatniks to Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Mahlathini, and Moses Mchunu and paved the way for Paul Simon's "Graceland". The album was conceived by white South African expatriates Trevor Herman and Jumbo Vanrenen and released in 1985 on the British-based Earthworks label. THE KINGS AND QUEENS OF TOWNSHIP JIVE: MODERN ROOTS OF THE INDESTRUCTIBLE BEAT OF SOWETO (Earthworks) If the successors to Earthworks's epochal mbaqanga comp have been too professional, the predecessors from Rounder and such haven't been professional enough. So finally, here are the '60s/'70s hits. Whenever things get too skeletal a hook arises from the clatter-if not one of the preclimaxes dance rats live for, then maybe a laugh line, a tune, a Horace Silver sample.

Indisputably the greatest black vocal group of the modern era, this quintet created masterpiece after masterpiece of chugging, gospel-tinged soul. Anthology captures a slice of the Temps' prime, including "My Girl," "I Can't Get Next to You" and "I Wish It Would Rain. Newman draws on his roots in the blues and New Orleans boogie to uncorck this blistering portrait of the American South. He shows that he was pop's most cutting satirist on "Rednecks" – a song that doesn't spare Northern or Southern racism; Newman once said he still gets nervous playing it in some cities.
