The delights of Mullican’s honky tonk piano might have been lost in the mists of obscurity had Jerry Lee Lewis not been so vocal about him being a major influence. Yet, while The Killer clearly drew huge inspiration from his hero’s hyperactive ivory-tinkling, it only tells part of the story. Country music is clearly the most visible touchstone to Mullican’s music, but look beyond the white stetson permanently resting on his head and you’ll find a musician weened on ragtime and jazz who liberally stitched genres together.
