Dare I call this a masterpiece of 60's baroque psych-pop? The answer is yes! Let's start with side one, lead off track, Sounds Of Time, setting the tone with harmonies similar to Association, combined with Soft Machine type sonic innovations. Next, Began To Burn is a baroque pop delight up there with Walk Away Rene. Monkey lets loose with a Human Beinz Nobody But Me beat. She's Gone evokes Left Banke, while Poor Pauline has the feel of Procol Harum's early work. Side concludes with the fantastic Mr. Tree, a swirling, dreamy track ala Love's Orange Skies.Side Two starts out with a less intense (no seagull sound effects!!) Tomorrow Never Knows groove. Studeao Atlantis reminds of Steve Miller Bands' Brave New World soundscape. Pick Up In The Morning sounds like Buffalo Springfield with lyrics by Monty Python (!) - basically about things one can do in the sunshine set to a strident tempo. The album concludes with a cool quartet of instrumentals, one for each season, that Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks would admire, orchestration combined with nature sound effects,. It concludes with a whistled track, groovy and moody. Overall, a great collection of pop songs in the baroque style, as established by The Beatles' Eleanor Rigby, and quite frankly, in my opinion, under appreciated.
