Bayreuth was not the first choice. When Richard Wagner roughly sketched his Festival idea in 1850, his thoughts circled around Zurich or Weimar, and later around Munich. Twenty years passed until, in terms of modern jargon, he googled the name of the Frankish gem; Hans Richter had drawn him to the vacant Margravial Opera House of the city of Bayreuth. A year later, the first visit of the town followed, the house proved to be unsuitable for the purpose of the Ring performance, but the city pleased the composer.

The Bayreuth Festival (German: Bayreuther Festspiele) is a music festival held annually in Bayreuth, Germany, at which performances of operas by the 19th-century German composer Richard Wagner are presented. Wagner himself conceived and promoted the idea of a special festival to showcase his own works, in particular his monumental cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen and Parsifal.

The Bayreuth Festspielhaus or Bayreuth Festival Theatre is an opera house north of Bayreuth, Germany, built by the 19th-century German composer Richard Wagner and dedicated solely to the performance of his stage works. It is the venue for the annual Bayreuth Festival, for which it was specifically conceived and built. Its official name is pielhaus.

The Finnish conductor Pietari Inkinen will make his debut at the celebrated Bayreuth Festival to conduct their new production of Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen in the summer of 2020. The production will be directed by Valentin Schwarz. The opportunity to immerse myself in the special atmosphere of the Festival, working alongside so many talented and experienced colleagues both on and off the stage, will undoubtedly be a highlight of my career. Inkinen has had a deep and distinctive connection with Wagner’s music throughout his career. His timely first album as Chief Conductor of that orchestra will be released on August 9th, and will feature excerpts from Siegfried with the experienced Wagner soloists Lise Lindstrom (Brünnhilde) and Stefan Vinke (Siegfried), singers with whom Inkinen has collaborated on earlier Wagner productions.

A mandatory set for Wagnerians and lovers of great singing. Here are some of the leading lights of German opera in recordings made between 1929 and 1939. Nostalgic packaging make it look like an old album of 78s from the 1930s, and the notes by Jürgen Kesting give you a good sense of who these (mostly obscure) singers are.

Tuesday, June 14, 2011. Various Artists - Great Aussie Rock (1975). Australian 1973-1975). Other than Festival Records, no local company has had such a dramatic impact on Australian popular music as Michael Gudinski's Mushroom label. Although it struggled as a minor player for its first two years, it had a major effect on the direction of Australian music because of the many important acts it signed, and because of its intimate business connections with what became the leading east coast agency, Premier Artists. Phil is one of the great Aussie guitarists and his playing on this sets a pretty high standard. The superb title track opens the album and fairly well sets the scene for what is to come. Renee Geyer also features on vocals.
