Like the other three Ballett albums, Ballett 2 was first released in 2000 as part of the ten-CD box set Contemporary Works 1 and later reissued as a single CD in Revisited's career-encompassing reissue program (number 87 in that series). Klaus Schulze composed the Ballett cycle for his mother, who used to be a ballet dancer. Ballett 2 is a continuous, 74-minute piece in four segueing movements. Atmosphère Concrète" starts off in a disquieting and rather abstract mood.

The music could have had another title but since it was the first production I did after the death of my mother, I called it Ballett and just numbered the four parts. I first met Tiepold in the summer of 1978 during the production of X in Panne-Paulsen studios, Frankfurt/Main, where I had previously recorded Moondawn (1976). For X, I really wanted an orchestra, but most of all a cello.

Klaus Schulze (born 4 August 1947) is a German electronic music pioneer, composer and musician. He also used the alias Richard Wahnfried. He was briefly a member of the Krautrock bands Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel, and The Cosmic Jokers before launching a solo career consisting of more than 60 albums released across five decades.
