Deceit is the second and final studio album by English experimental rock band This Heat, released in 1981 by Rough Trade Records. As with their self-titled debut album, the tracks on Deceit were assembled from largely improvised recordings that the band accumulated since their inception in 1976, with varying degrees of audio quality. However, it is generally considered to be more song-orientated than its largely abstract predecessor. The title is in part a pun on the band's name.

Their second and final album, 1981's Deceit, doesn't entirely do away with the extreme sonic abstraction. Radio Prague" is an experiment in mechanical pulses and cut-up radio broadcasts, and "Hi Baku Shyo (Suffer Bomb Disease)" is a kind of expressionist sound painting of a post-nuclear landscape: wails, church bells, buzzing flies. For the most part, though, the album marks a significant leap forward in songwriting. Mixed by the reggae engineer Martin Frederick, it also marks a significant improvement in fidelity. For many years, This Heat records were hard to come by, though sporadic reissues and compilation features helped keep their legacy alive. And yet, This Heat also feel further from the zeitgeist than ever.

Out of all the boundary breaking that occurred during the fertile era of post-punk, This Heat's Deceit is one of the most expansive, imaginative, and remarkably wild records to have been produced during the time - and very possibly the last three decades. It's an impressive procession of tangential shards that encompass tape collages, Middle Eastern motifs, barbaric vocal clamoring, and occasional guitar passages that alternate between hypnotizing and shooting clean through your spine.

Deceit was This Heat's second studio album and their final release before they split in 1982. It's also a concept album that is both very much of its time and timeless - the themes it explores remain relevant today, and some of the songs have become even more apposite in the last 25 years. From Mad Max's cinematic vision of a post apocalyptic wasteland to Prince urging "Ronnie Talk To Russia" to Boy George singing the exceedingly stupid "War" nuclear paranoia was everywhere, and membership of CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) reached record levels. This was the backdrop to Deceit, arguably the sharpest and most intelligent musical response that the era produced.
