For fans of Magnus Lindberg, this French release is very much worth checking out. It contains four pieces performed by the Ensemble Intercontemporain conducted by Peter Eotvos. Even if other recordings exist in performance by Finnish musicians close to the composer, this one is unique for its superb sound quality. Recorded in IRCAM's projection space, this disc presents Lindberg's orchestral writing clear as crystal, with the spatial separation of the instruments readily audible

Magnus Lindberg (born 27 June 1958, Helsinki) is a Finnish composer and pianist. He was the New York Philharmonic's e from 2009 to 2012. After finishing it Lindberg found it hard to compose, and with the exception of 1986's Ur, which. he called "Kraft in chamber form", he entered a creative hiatus that was to last for over two years. During this time he was not only rethinking his style but also recovering from a tropical disease contracted during travel in Indonesia. This showed itself first in the work for chamber ensemble, Corrente (1992) (and its subsequent orchestral version, Corrente II from the same year), and Duo Concertante (1992). In these works, Lindberg showed influences ranging from Pierre Boulez and Tristan Murail to Igor Stravinsky and Minimalism. His symphonic work Aura (1994) reflects a newer, more eclectic style.

Publisher: Chester Music. Duo Concertante (1992). commissioned by Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR). Style is an aspect of musical writing I have been focusing a lot of intention to during the last years. Duo Concertante includes odd scherzo characters, puristic serial music, spectral music affects, even minimalistic approaches are recognizable. Pluralism "an sich" is not necessarily very interesting, for me it has been more a question of a kaleidoscopic writing based on a maximal variety brought out from a rather limited musical material.
