David Zinman's performances with the Zurich Tonhalle follow those by Daniel Barenboim with the Berlin Staatskapelle for Warner, and though the sound of the Swiss orchestra may be far less distinctive than that of the Berlin players, Zinman's performances are otherwise far superior - arguably, in fact, the best modern-instrument recordings of these works since Wolfgang Sawallisch's famous EMI set. of the 1970s.

Sample this album Artist (Sample). This is a very fine Mahler Sixth, a recording that is certainly justifiable as part of the Tonhalle's ongoing cycle of the Mahler Symphonies. However, this performance could not have been released at a worse time.
