Their works for cello and sonata have not panned out to be cornerstones of the repertoire, however, and a performance of these works would need to be extremely powerful to warrant their inclusion on Vol. 1. That is precisely what cellist Peter Bruns and pianist Annegret Kuttner pull off. Their playing is entirely captivating and by the end of the album, one may wonder why these works are not performed more frequently. Bruns is both passionate and refined, with a rich German sound that adds real body and depth to these French compositions.

Charles-Marie Jean Albert Widor (21 February 1844 – 12 March 1937) was a French organist, composer and teacher, most notable for his ten organ symphonies. Widor was born in Lyon, to a family of organ builders, and initially studied music there with his father, François-Charles Widor, titular organist of Saint-François-de-Sales from 1838 to 1889.

Album title: Vierne, Widor. Composer(s): Vierne, Widor. Both Charles-Marie Widor and Louis Vierne, however, deserve wider exposure, and this disc offers further proof of the quality of their chamber music. Indeed, Widor’s output was as wide-ranging as his fascinating life (1844-1937), which spanned several momentous chapters in French history and brought him into contact with musical figures ranging from Rossini to Milhaud. Three exquisite miniatures from Widor’s Op. 21 Suite for cello and piano open this programme in style, and his intricately worked Sonata, Op. 80, is even more rewarding.
