We'd Like to Teach the World to Sing is the name given to two albums by UK pop group The New Seekers. The first of these, released in late 1971 was a repackaging of their previous album New Colours and was released in the US. The second version of the album was released in the UK and Europe in 1972 with a new line-up of tracks. Both albums however contained the song "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing (In Perfect Harmony)".
Lyn Paul of The New Seekers recalled to The Daily Mail May 15, 2009 that none of the group particularly rated this number. She said: "We thought it was a silly, soppy song. So it was hilarious when they decided to make it into a single. I think that the idea of this song came from the song 'Teach Your Children', sung and played by the group 'CSN&Y, form the album 'Dajave' in 1970. The song was very famous and was also featured by a British film 'Melody' in 1971, too. What does that mean ? I think that the songwriters of the song 'I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing' liked the song,'Teach Your Children', when they heard this song and tried to write a song like this ! Let's take a look at the title of the both songs ! It was very similar.
US Version of "New Colours" Album released 1971 by Polydor. Elektra Entertainment did repackaging of same album with different title "We'd Like To Teach The World To Sing", 1971.
I'd like to build the world a home And furnish it with love Grow apple trees and honey bees And snow white turtle doves. I'd like to teach the world to sing In perfect harmony I'd like to hold it in my arms And keep it company. I'd like to see the world for once All standing hand in hand And hear them echo through the hills For peace through out the land (That's the song I hear). I'd like to teach the world to sing In perfect harmony. And on the same 'Bandstand' episode they sang their only other Top 100 hit, "We're Together", it stayed on the chart for one week, right at position (and it was also from a TV commercial; McDonalds' "You Deserve A Break Today" jingle).
It also beat out the Hillside Singers, who brought the same tune to the Top 15 the week before. But there's a certain genius to it all, come to think of it. Inundated with the melody via incessant ads, one almost can hear "Coca Cola" in the song, or strain to think the group is singing, "It's the real thing. It was also during the time that the hit record ruled, so all in all, We'd Like to Teach the World to Sing is an acceptable and respectable outing.
