Robert Starer, who has died of congestive heart failure aged 77, was widely regarded as one of the leading, and most prolific, American composers of his generation. He was, in fact, an immigrant, who had been born in Austria, had served with the Royal Air Force during the second war and only became a US citizen in 1957 - after 10 years' residency.
