Artie Shaw (born Arthur Jacob Arshawsky; May 23, 1910 – December 30, 2004) was an American clarinetist, composer, bandleader, and actor. Also an author, Shaw wrote both fiction and non-fiction. Widely regarded as "one of jazz's finest clarinetists", Shaw led one of the United States' most popular big bands in the late 1930s through the early 1940s. Though he had numerous hit records, he was perhaps best known for his 1938 recording of Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine".
Artie Shaw (born May 23, 1910, New York City, New York, USA - died December 30, 2004, Thousand Oaks, California, USA) was an American clarinetist and bandleader. His first public appearance was in his native New York City on the 24th of May, 1936 and he became one of the biggest names in jazz in the 1930's and 1940's swing heyday. He quit the music world in the mid-1950's and spent much of the second half of his life devoted to writing and other pursuits. He was married eight times including to Lana Turner (1940) and Ava Gardner (1945-46).
Artie Shaw is easily one of the finest jazz clarinetists of all time, with a smooth and swinging style all his own. Shaw always hired the best musicians - Buddy Rich, Billy Butterfield and Zoot Sims, for example - and even led one of the finest mainstream Bop bands around during the mid-50s. Then at the peak of creativity Shaw stopped making music, greatly saddening Benny Goodman, his equally hotheaded clarinet rival
