Graindelavoix and its director, Björn Schmelzer, have been praised for their imaginative approach to interpreting early music, especially for emphasizing the qualities of individual voices, as opposed to presenting a blended ensemble sound.

With 'Motets', Björn Schmelzer and Graindelavoix conclude their innovative exploration of musical worlds comparable to that of the Northern French artist Villard de Honnecourt, the producer of a carnet (or portfolio) of drawings made in connection with the new Gothic cathedrals being built in the 13th century. In concluding this special, ground-breaking trilogy of recordings for Glossa, Schmelzer underlines the importance of the work of Villard in our modern-day understanding of how music in the 13th century was constructed and perhaps performed. The same such ideas inform the vocal (and instrumental) textures and delivery offered by Graindelavoix. the singing and playing is generally convincing and the performers are clearly well acquainted with this quirky repertoire.

At last! A new recording of Machaut's 'Messe de Nostre Dame' from Björn Schmelzer and Graindelavoix, one of Glossa s long-standing artistic family members. Indeed, Graindelavoix are amazing! Really enjoyed their Motets from the Cambrai manuscript A 410 (Glossa GCD P32109). Hope their new interpretation of the famous Machaut's Lady Mass won't disappoint as well.

Graindelavoix is much less an early music ensemble and much more an art collective experimenting between the fields of performance and creation, comprising singers and instrumentalists led by Björn Schmelzer. Graindelavoix and the 'Antwerp connection' news : 24/03/2017. For his latest Glossa CD with Graindelavoix, Björn Schmelzer takes his lead from the funeral rites for the Flemish Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens in 1640 – which might well have encompassed the Requiem Mass by Orazio Vecchi as recorded here – to demonstrate the coexistence in Baroque Antwerp of two apparently contradictory, but interconnected facets.
