Tippett has let it be known thatThe Rose Lakewill be his last orchestral work, but except in the primacy it gives to melody it does not sound valedictory.

The first performance of The Rose Lake, at London's Barbican Centre in 1995, was a memorable occasion. Although Tippett had already stated it would be his last major work, what might have been a nostalgic evening turned out to be anything but: here was a substantial (28 minutes) orchestral work to rank with the best the composer had written.

It was composed between 1970 and 1972 and received its premiere on 22 June 1972 at the Royal Festival Hall, London, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra with the soprano Heather Harper conducted by Colin Davis. The symphony is notable for its use of blues and its direct quotation of the opening of the finale of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
