Schumann’s works for piano trio were written within a decade of each other yet represent three distinct periods in the composer’s life, the emotional span of the four works reflected in Schumann’s all-too-short 46-year life span. Grammy-nominated violinist Jesse Mills first performed with Raman Ramakrishnan, founding cellist of the award-winning Daedalus Quartet, when they were children at the Vermont-based Kinhaven Music School. Since their debut in 2011 at New York City’s Rockefeller University, the Horszowski Trio has performed throughout North America, Asia and India. The programmes on the trio’s extensive 2019 touring schedule, which include a Wigmore Hall debut, feature Schumann’s expansive works.
Music Classical Recordings. Schumann: Complete Works for Piano Trio. By anthony tommasiniaug. EMI Classics 0 94180 2; CD. IN some circles Schumann is regarded as having been best suited to composing suites, songs, fantasies and other genres that gave full vent to his teeming musical imagination. He was less good, the thinking goes, at channeling his voice into symphonies, sonatas and chamber music forms. This take on Schumann is challenged by an exciting new recording of his complete works for piano trio, performed by three superb musicians who play together often: the pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, the violinist Christian Tetzlaff and the cellist Tanja Tetzlaff (Mr. Tetzlaff’s sister)
The Horszowski Trio debuts on the Avie label with the complete piano trios by Robert Schumann. The works were written within a decade of each other yet represent three distinct periods in the composer’s life. Based in New York, the trio is in residence at the Longy School of Music of Bard College.
